BIO BUCKET

What is a BIO BUCKET ??

A BioBucket is an organic process that transfers organic amendments into usable hydroponic nutrients at virtually no cost to you.

The top portion of the bucket is the media layer. This is where the microbes replicate and break down the organic dry amendments into a usable leachate.

The bottom bucket is your reservoir where your leachate water is located.

The water is percolated and/or pumped up via a variety of methods.

Air lift uses air to lift the leachate water up into the upper bucket for proper decomposition.

Pump lift uses a standard pump and a venturi aeration valve.

What is a Leachate ??

Defined Leachate - "Water that has percolated through a solid and leached out some of the constituents."

The science behind this concept:

Reservoir water is run over the amendments and through the media to create an area for particulates in the amendments to break down, thus allowing them to convert the nitrogen and other compounds into a usable leachate.

Running the leachate through the amendments for about fifteen minutes twice a day is enough. Even when the water is not running, immobilized bacteria are working on the organics in the system. Each time you run water through the media you will flush out the byproduct of these microbes, nitrate, ammonia, etc. There is no one or best way to do it. It all depends on inputs, temperatures and setup. It's best to test things and find what method works best for you.

BUILD LIST

2 x 5 Gallon Bucket

1 x 1" pvc pipe 10"s long

1 x 1/2" PVC pipe

1 x coco coir basket

1 x coco coir

1 x 250gph pump

First take the reservoir bucket and place the lid onto the bucket.

Then, take the media bucket and place it on top of the lid.

Drill 1/2" holes down through the bottom of the upper bucket and through the lid of the lower bucket.

Now drill in your hole for your 1" overflow pipe and ensure it is within reach of your lift pipe.

Drill the hole for the lift pipe and run it through the 2 buckets as shown in the above video.

Once you add the lift pipe and the holes are drilled, connect the pump at the bottom.

Fill the lower bucket with non chlorinated water and the upper bucket fill in this order:

Coco basket in bottom

3" layer of coco coir

Paint strainer bag

Hydroponic media

Now add your dispersion tray to the top of your media bucket as shown in video. A dispersion tray is just a planter or drip tray with evenly spaced holes for distribution.

Add in 1 cup of worm castings and 2 tbsp of each dry amendment with (NPK)

Allow the water to run over the media at least 2 times per day for 15 mins.

After about a month the lower bucket should have undergone nitrification and all should be in usable form for hydroponic or other plant feeding needs.

**Important** Get an API Master Kit for testing Nitrification Levels**

What is Nitrification ? "The process in which bacteria in the soil use oxygen to change compounds of nitrogen in dead plant material into nitrates which plants can then absorb as food"
