SOIL MAKE UP TEST (What components are in your soil)

A Simple Soil Make Up Test will reveal the components in your soil

4 Main components of soil are

     - SAND

     - SILT

     - CLAY

     - Organic Matter

There are 1000's of variations to these soil components but these are the basics.

So what ratios are the BEST ??

BEST = 20% clay, 40% Silt, 40% sand

SILTY/CLAY = 30% clay, 60% silt, 10% sand

SANDY = 15% clay, 20% silt, 65% sand

SILTY = 15% clay, 65% silt, 20% sand

How to Test your soils Component make up ??

This test is extremely easy and low tech, making it achievable for pretty much everyone world wide!!!

     Supplies Needed:

          -  Jars (as many as you have garden beds)

HOW TO:

     - Use a clear clean empty jar for your experiment.

     - Fill jar half way with soil from your garden

*(You can take it from each bed to know each locations Makeup or you can take a little from each bed to get a more "general" soil composition test.)

      - Fill rest of Jar with water leaving at least an inch at the top for shake room.

      - Shake mix vigorously for several minutes until all particles are fully suspended in the water

Let the Mix Sit for Several Hours to settle the particulates!!!

      - The particles will separate as they settle into different components. (SAND, SILT, CLAY,)

SAND / ROCKS - Being the heaviest will settle to the bottom first.

SILT - Being the second heaviest will settle in the 2nd layer

CLAY - Being the lightest of the 3 will be at the top layer.

ORGANIC MATTER - Should be floating and suspended even after the layers form

**NOTE - Light colored soils are most often much less in organic matter while darker soils are much more infused with organic matter. The darker soil also warms up faster when spring hits thus making it a more hospitable place to plant seedlings and other plants.
